Bumper plates are designed to be dropped from significant heights, the rubber helps to absorb the shock when the bar is dropped. And because the weight plates are all the same size, they can share the impact as well as balance the weight load when resting on the floor. NOTE care must be taken with lighter weights to reduce the risk of them tacoing.
