Trampolines – get up and go!

Looking at trampolines but can’t decide whether to get one or not?

Trampolines are the latest garden toy craze – but they’re not really a toy: trampolines are serious sporting equipment and you should always remember that when you’re deciding to buy one. In just the same way as you’d choose a golf club or tennis racquet carefully, a trampoline needs to be able to fulfil safety requirements as well as fitness and fun requirements in order for you to get the most for your money. Buying a cheap trampoline could result in disaster so it’s worth doing your research before you spend your money.

Picking your trampoline

Taking the time to choose the right trampoline will pay off in the long run. Whether you’re buying for yourself or for your children, a trampoline should last for years. Look for a strong frame and closely-woven jumping bed that’s attached by springs, not webbing, and close-fitting joints so that the frame retains its strength. Check the weight limit so that you know how much weight the jumping bed can take. This is particularly important if you are expecting adults to use the trampoline, or if you know there will be more than one child on the trampoline at any one time.

Assembling trampolines

Most trampolines arrive at their destination flat-packed and require the new owner to assemble them. You must do this by following the instructions strictly. The way the frame is assembled and the way the jumping bed is attached to the trampoline frame are crucial to the safety and performance of the trampoline. Always make sure you site your trampoline on a flat surface, or jumpers are likely to fall off more easily. If you have bought a safety net, make sure it is properly attached so that it will provide a barrier – particularly for smaller children.

Get up and go!

It’s worth buying a ladder for your trampoline so that people can get on and off easily. Once everything is assembled, your trampoline is ready for bouncing. Trampolines usually come with instructions on safe use, and you should read these before you start, but once you’re confident, just get up there and have a go – you’ll wonder why you didn’t buy one sooner!
