Trampolines – A Space Odyssey

Fitness of astronauts is of paramount importance when space missions are concerned and a study by space agency NASA found that trampolines were the best apparatus for keeping astronauts in shape.

For those who venture into space, being in peak physical condition is imperative and, as such, NASA dedicated much time to the fitness regimes they subjected their astronauts to. The discovered that trampolines were the perfect form of exercise in terms of the strains it put on the body and the ability of trampolines to simulate weightlessness.

Trampolines – The Greatest Sporting Invention?

Well, if NASA’s research into the fitness of their astronauts is to be believed the, yes, perhaps trampolines are right up there with the greatest sporting inventions. A study by the Journal of Applied Physiology deduced that trampolines are “the most effective, efficient form of exercise yet devised by man”. And, in addition to this, NASA concluded that “for similar levels of heart rate and oxygen consumption, the magnitude of the biomechanical stimuli is greater with jumping on a trampoline than with running, a finding that might help identify acceleration parameters needed for the design of remedial procedures to avert deconditioning in persons exposed to weightlessness”. As such, the use of trampolines became a mainstay of the fitness regimes devised by NASA scientists for their astronauts embarking on space missions.

Trampolines – Uses On Planet Earth

NASA may be extolling the virtues of trampolines but it is safe to say that they also have many benefits for those remaining on terra firma. NASA primarily employs the use of trampolines as they successfully simulate weightlessness and produce the most time and energy efficient work out. However, it is clear that they have many health benefits for astronauts and non-astronauts alike. In an age where obesity is becoming an epidemic, trampolines are increasingly being used to curb weight gain and promote weight loss. It is generally accepted that calories will burn more efficiently during trampoline exercise and there is less stress on the body than with jogging, running or skipping.
